President’s Letter for November, 2023

Greetings to All,

On November 4th, the Ole Virginia Hams held a VE Session at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Clifton Campus.

We had 7 candidates in total, 8 tests given as one gentleman took both the General Exam as well as his Extra. I am pleased to report that we had 6 new licenses or upgrades.

I’d like to thank Lord of Life Church for once again allowing us space for our VE Sessions.

The VEs who attended were:  Al, KB4BHB; John, KG4NXT; Jay, NQ4T; David, KY4MM; Byron, AK4XR and yours truly, Ken, KN4DD.

Speaking of VE Sessions, John has been our Coordinator for years now, and has been wanting to take a break. I am pleased to announce that Mark, WA4KFZ, will be taking over that position starting January, 2024.

A big thank you to John, KG4NXT for leading us as Coordinator for all of that time.

November 11th is Veterans Day. As you probably know, originally it was designated as Armistice Day in remembrance of World War I veterans. It has since evolved in the US to honor ALL veterans of our military services.  So, I’d like to take a moment to thank all of our members who have served, and also all who are currently defending, those who have served, and especially the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Thank You.

Now that November is once again seasonably cold, the leaves are either dropping or have already dropped. So, unless you ran your end fed antenna through some evergreens like I did, it would be easier to inspect any tree supported antennas you might have now. After that, you could deal with those leaves.

Our breakfast is this Saturday, November 18th at 8:00 AM. Pioneered by Byron, AK4XR, we get together every Saturday before our meetings at a table or two in the back of Yorkshire Restaurant for some good food and good conversation.

Our next monthly meeting Tuesday, November 21st in the Training Room.

7:30 PM – 9:00 PM EDT
Buckhall VFD Hall
7190 Yates Ford Road
Manassas, VA 20111

It is the last official meeting of the year. Our December Holiday Party is also our December monthly meeting. So, no official business, just good times.

The 77th Greater Manassas Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 2nd at 10 AM. We still need some volunteer spotters.  OVH will be providing comms support for the parade and the club trailer will be a part of it! Theresa, KG4TVM has volunteers to help decorate the club trailer (Daniela) and (James, KQ4CAX) to drive it as our float is in that parade. If you are available to be a spotter, please contact George, K4GVT via e-mail   george@k4gvt.com

The last event for the Holiday season will be, of course, the OVH’s World Famous Holiday Party to be held again at the Yorkshire Restaurant.

We will gather on Sunday evening, December 10th, for our meeting/party. For our new members, that means no regular monthly meeting. This is it. The party will run from 6 PM until ~8 PM.

Please bring a covered dish, ham and turkey will be provided by the club. Hopefully John, KG4NXT will make his venison chili for us. Bring your friends and family.

And bring an unwrapped gift (or two) for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots. Theresa, KG4TVM is in charge as usual. The OVH will receive the toys collected & will make sure they get to the Toys for Tots campaign. If you can’t make the party, please consider making a Toys for Tots donation where you are able. And so, a great time is guaranteed for all!

Also, a reminder to check in to the OVH’s Thursday night VHF/UHF repeater net at 8 PM.
The details for that are on the OVH’s web site:  https://w4ovh.net
This is a great way to stay in touch.
